GM’s 49,000 workers in U.S. set to strike at midnight after contract talks break down, UAW says

The union representing about 49,000 General Motors workers in the U.S. said they would go on strike at midnight Sunday night because contract negotiations with the automaker had broken down, in what would be the first broad strike since 1982. “We do not take this lightly,” UAW vice-president says following meetings in Detroit.
